You may be wondering why a truck driver just doesn’t stop at a truck stop or restaurant when they need to use the restroom? 3 Reasons:
- One of the main reasons is a truck stop or rest area is often many miles away, and the driver doesn’t think they can hold on to make it there.
- Another reason is because there isn’t truck parking at many fast food restaurants or stores.
- The third reason is because they don’t have the time to just stop.
A truck driver is on a tight schedule, and once their time clock starts, they just can’t stop to use the restroom. The driver’s main concern is making money and being on time to deliver or pick up their load.
Many times, they just don’t have the extra time to stop to use the restroom, which is why they have to use other options, like the ones below.

Peeing at a Truck Stop
Most truck drivers pee at a truck stop or at rest areas.

If there is a rest stop with truck parking, a driver can stop there.
One thing that most people don’t think about with truck drivers is they are driving a semi-truck with a trailer attached to it.
When a driver needs to go pee, they can’t just pull over at any fast food restaurant, a gas station, or grocery store, because there is no truck parking, which leaves very little options for a truck driver.
Many truck stops offer truck drivers with perks, and one of the most popular one is every driver that is fueling their truck will get a free shower.
This is a great perk for a truck driver. The driver can take their 10 hours off at the truck stop, fuel up their truck, then take a shower, and use the private bathroom that comes with the free shower.
When a driver is an over-the-road driver a private bathroom is the closest thing to being at home.
If you are a driver and you are stopping at the truck stop for the night, but you won’t be fueling your truck you need to make sure that if you pee in a bottle make sure you dispose of it in the trash.
Many drivers will just throw the bottles under the truck when they are leaving.
That leaves a big mess for the next driver and the truck stop.

Using Portable Toilets (they are a life saver)
A portable toilet is another way that a trucker can pee and use the restroom when there are no other options.
Having a portable toilet is convenient for a driver that is fifty or more miles from a truck stop or rest area.
The portable toilet is compact, they are sealed so unwanted odors don’t come out in the cab, and they are very durable.

One of the benefits to having a portable toilet in the truck is convenience.
If you need to go to the restroom and you can’t reach one for many miles, then you can pull over on a ramp and go or if the weather is bad and you wake up during the night and you need to go, then you can do so without leaving the truck.
There are benefits and drawbacks with portable toilets.

Portable toilets are ideal for drivers when there are no other options, but most of the portable toilets are hard to keep clean if you don’t know what you are doing.

Plastic Bottles (wide mouth)
Gatorade bottles are the bottle of choice for truck drivers to pee in but any bottle with a wide mouth will do. Other common plastic bottles include juice bottles and milk jugs.
Why a Gatorade bottle? A Gatorade bottle has a wider opening and the bottle can hold up to twenty fluid ounces.
Everyone is different, but normally an individual can urinate from four to sixteen fluid ounces every time they pee.
The wide mouth plastic bottle makes it easier for a trucker to pee into.
The driver sits or stands in the cab of the truck and pee, then they have to dispose the bottle.
A soda bottle is usually twelve fluid ounces and the opening is much smaller compared to a wide mouth bottle like Gatorade, which is why truck drivers choose the Gatorade bottle when they need to pee and can’t get to a restroom, and many drivers just throws the pee filled bottle out the window when they are done.
This is becoming a problem for many truck stops, rest areas, and the highways.
The plastic bottle that is full of pee is also known as a trucker bomb.
Truck drivers deal with extreme amounts of stress with their job.
Most drivers are paid by the mile and not by the hour.
To make a living some drivers have to do what they have to just to keep that truck rolling to make money, which boils down that they just don’t have the time to stop somewhere to pee.
One county in Washington state decided to count how many ‘trucker bombs’ were collected in a year. (Source)
The collected nearly 2,700 trucker bombs along with nearly 70 feces bags.
California had to hire a waste contractor to collect trucker bombs.
Washington has now put forth a law for truckers. If a trucker is found throwing a trucker bomb on the highway, they are fined $1,025.
Wyoming is also ticketing drivers $1,000 along with nine months in jail.
Many other states have decided to join in by ticketing drivers in hopes that drivers will stop littering the highways with trucker bombs.
Plastic Bags (make sure it doesn’t leak)
Plastic bags are being used by truck drivers when they need to defecate or pee.
This is usually used only when the driver has no other options.
The plastic bags are also known as “Flying Toilet” with truck drivers.
The driver has to use the plastic bag, then they tie it shut, and they are often found along the highways, truck stop parking lots, and rest areas.
It’s troubling for most is why doesn’t the driver throw them in a garbage can as soon as they can instead of throwing them out their window?
Commercial Devices Made for Urinating While Driving (bags and bottles)
There are now devices made for urinating while driving for male and female truck drivers.
Having one of these devices will make peeing in an emergency much easier.
Male Urinal Bag: The male urinal bag can hole up to 16 ounces of fluids. The urinal bag is leak resistant and has a super absorbent pad.
Once you are finished, then the bag can be sealed so there are no odors. The price is approximately eighteen dollars, which is very affordable.

All truck drivers need to try to be sanitary when they have to pee in their truck.
Truck drivers should keep hand sanitizer, baby wipes, paper towels, and bottled water in their truck so you can clean yourself up once you are done.
Is It Illegal To Pee In A Bottle?
It is not illegal to pee in a bottle, but many states are starting to fine truck drivers who throw the pee bottles out their windows and litter the highways.
Washington state, Oregon, and Utah are just a couple states that are fining hundreds of dollars along with jail time for any driver throwing pee bottles on the highways.
Is It Illegal to Throw Away Pee in the Garbage?
It is not illegal to throw pee in the garbage.
Actually, many states and truck stops encourage it, because they are trying to stop the thousands of pee bottles from littering the roads and parking lots around the country.
It is understandable that there are many times that a truck driver can’t stop to pee, which leaves them with no other choice, but to pee in a bottle.
They can dispose of that bottle legally in the garbage.
Truck drivers pee at many places and using many ways.
Of course, a driver would prefer to use an actual restroom to pee, but with a demanding schedule, and most drivers get paid by the mile, they have to keep the truck rolling to make money.
